That is why a roofing inspection should go beyond checking for missing or curled shingles.

A reliable roof-to-wall connection depends on properly installed flashing that works with the wall’s water-resistant barrier.

Ryan says contractors replacing a roof may claim they replaced or inspected the flashing, but fully evaluating it can require removing several inches of siding. Small holes or deterioration may otherwise remain hidden.

The wall system also matters. Siding itself is not designed to stop every drop of water. A properly installed house wrap or water-resistive barrier provides another drainage layer behind it.

According to the Department of Energy’s guidance on water-managed walls, exterior cladding can allow some rainwater through because of joints, gaps, wind pressure, and capillary action. The barrier underneath should channel that moisture safely back outside.

As Ryan puts it, “The water is going to go where you tell it to go.”

Why Should Flashing Be Checked When Siding Is Replaced?

Replacing siding creates an ideal opportunity to inspect and correct flashing that may be difficult to reach later.

Once siding is removed, contractors can see the upper portion of the roof flashing and determine whether it was installed correctly or should be replaced.

Addressing both systems at once can prevent a homeowner from installing new siding over an existing moisture problem. It can also avoid having to remove recently installed siding when the roof eventually needs replacement.

Ryan explains that Right Roofing looks at these projects as connected systems rather than isolated jobs. If flashing is accessible during a siding project, fixing it then can save additional work later.

How Can Gutters Cause Hidden Water Damage?

Improperly installed gutters can allow water to run behind the gutter instead of into it, gradually damaging the fascia and soffit.

Ryan highlights the gutter apron, the metal transition between the roof edge and gutter. When the gutter and apron do not overlap correctly, water may travel behind the gutter.

This type of damage can develop slowly. A homeowner might not notice anything significant for years until fascia begins rotting, paint fails, or moisture reaches the soffit.

Kickout flashing serves a similar water-management role near roof-wall intersections. The Department of Energy explains that kickout flashing redirects roof runoff into gutters instead of allowing concentrated water to flow down the wall.

Soffits support roof ventilation, while valleys handle concentrated runoff, making both important parts of a complete roofing system.

Ryan explains that soffits commonly provide intake air for attic ventilation. If older soffit vents become blocked, airflow may decline even when exhaust vents remain in place.

Valleys face a different challenge. They collect significant amounts of runoff along with leaves, twigs, and other debris. Water therefore needs a clear path through the center of the valley.

The Department of Energy identifies roof valleys and penetrations as especially vulnerable areas and recommends additional water-management materials in these locations.

If valley shingles are cut or installed incorrectly, water can work underneath them and produce leaks that are difficult to trace.

How Does Iowa Weather Affect Roof Penetrations?

Iowa’s temperature swings and UV exposure can gradually deteriorate rubber components around roof penetrations.

Pipe boots and similar components often contain rubber seals exposed continuously to sunlight, heat, cold, rain, snow, and changing temperatures. Ryan says these areas require regular attention because they can become some of the earlier failure points in an otherwise healthy roofing system.

Routine inspections can help identify deteriorating seals before moisture reaches the roof deck or attic.
